E G Carter & Co Ltd has officially commenced refurbishment works at GL1 Leisure Centre, marking the start of an exciting programme of improvements to one of Gloucester’s most important leisure and community facilities.
Representatives from E G Carter & Co Ltd joined Gloucester City Council and Freedom Leisure at GL1 Leisure Centre on Monday 5th October to mark the official start of the project, following preparatory works and site set-up activity which began in September.
The extensive refurbishment will be delivered in two phases, with the first phase now underway. Works include the creation of a brand-new gym and functional fitness spaces, alongside a refreshed women’s-only gym.
The second phase, scheduled to begin in spring 2027, will introduce further improvements with children and families at the heart of the plans. These will include a new soft play facility, climbing wall and water play features, together with refurbished changing facilities and a new modern reception hub.
Gavin Carter, Contracts Manager at E G Carter & Co Ltd, said: “We’re proud to be working alongside Gloucester City Council and Freedom Leisure on the transformation of GL1 Leisure Centre. As a Gloucester-based company, it’s great to be involved in a project that will make a real difference for local residents and improve a facility that plays such an important role in the community.”
Iain Stark, Head of Transformation and Commissioning at Gloucester City Council, said: “GL1 is one of Gloucester's most valued community facilities, and this investment will ensure it continues to serve residents for years to come. These improvements will create modern, high-quality spaces for fitness, leisure and family activities, while enhancing the experience for everyone who uses the centre. It's great to see work now officially underway and we look forward to bringing these exciting new facilities to Gloucester together with Freedom Leisure.”
Ivan Horsfall Turner, Chief Executive Officer of Freedom Leisure, said: “We are delighted to officially commence this exciting refurbishment project alongside Gloucester City Council. GL1 plays a hugely important role within the community and these improvements will ensure the centre continues to offer high-quality facilities for people of all ages. We look forward to seeing the transformation take shape over the coming months.”
The project is being delivered by Gloucester City Council in partnership with Freedom Leisure, which operates GL1 Leisure Centre on behalf of the Council.
With works progressing through to autumn 2027, the completed refurbishment will provide enhanced facilities for gym members, swimmers, families and the wider community, helping GL1 continue to play an important role in leisure, fitness and wellbeing in Gloucester.
